This pre-declaration report records the customary history of Tanna and provides information regarding customary authority and land ownership as exercised through the Nakamal.
Its purpose is strictly limited to use by the Court, for matters of customary governance, and for educational purposes. This report does not constitute a declaration of ownership. It merely documents information preserved in the official Archives. Only the Court and the Nakamal trough the Customary Land Management authorities possess the legal authority to declare ownership of chiefly titles and the associated land.
No person, whether male or female, is permitted to copy, reproduce, distribute, or otherwise use this report for any commercial, professional, or other purposes without the express written permission of the author. Unauthorized use may constitute a violation of intellectual property rights and customary confidentiality.
This report provides triangulation evidence from academic sources, missionary books, Custom Law of Tanna, the Constitution of Vanuatu and Oral History. These records have existed for a long time and have not been changed.
This Pre-Declaration Evidence Report captures information shared by elders and missionaries from the 1700s to the 1800s. The report writer does not add personal opinions. All information comes from tribes and Nakamals around Tanna.
